EU4Youth Alumni in action

Is education a fundamental right that every child should have access to, regardless of their background or circumstances? Unfortunately, many disadvantaged young people are not aware of the available opportunities. That’s where the “Civic Education and Opportunities for Disadvantaged Youth” comes in, a project created by Xenia Martinov and Victor Gitlan, two EUYouth Alumni from Moldova.

The idea

This initiative aims to empower teenagers  from a local gymnasium “Steam”, located in Chisinau, with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed. “The “Civic Education and Opportunities for Disadvantaged Youth” project is more than just a training programme; it aims to inspire teenagers to be active and responsible citizens, which is essential for building and maintaining democracy. “By empowering young people with knowledge and skills, our activity contributes to the development of a stronger and more prosperous society” – says Victor and Xenia with a common voice, expressing their motivation to create the project. “It is a very important time for our country, a time for major changes and growth, and more that everything we need young people to be united, to know their values, to make their voices heard. Our future depends on youth, and we have to give them all our support” – they both underline.

Make it engaging and accessible

“The project is all about giving young people the chance to learn about their rights and obligations in everyday life. Through practical and understandable information, participants gain insight into the various opportunities available to them for their future. The meetings with the youth are designed to be engaging and accessible, with motivational videos and examples of opportunities they can apply for. The project also provides a platform for answering questions and providing advice to help participants navigate their options”, said Victor.

25 participants attended six trainings since January 2023. During these trainings, general rights and obligations were presented to the participants, and they were given the opportunity to share their thoughts and ask questions they had. The project also covered topics such as education in Moldova and abroad, the importance of studying, and the opportunities available to young people after the 9th grade. Through these trainings, participants gained valuable insights and were encouraged to consider their options for the future.

Also, the participants learned about the importance of developing necessary skills for their chosen paths. They were provided with resources and guidance on where to find information and other necessary support when they need it. By equipping these young individuals with practical knowledge and resources, the project aims to break the cycle of disadvantage and empower them to create a better future for themselves.

The project team organized interactive sessions where the participants engaged in group activities and discussions. These activities encouraged teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. By creating a supportive and collaborative environment, the project fostered personal growth and social interaction among the participants, helping them develop a sense of belonging and self-confidence.

Power of youth

“I am glad I was able to ask all the questions I had about the studies and work opportunities after the 9th grade, because I have exams soon and I’m not really sure what I want to do after. Now I know that I have more options available, and I feel more confident”, says Jasmina, 15, participant.

“I was surprised to hear about all the opportunities we have in Moldova for young people. I think I will apply to one of the Erasmus programs in the future”, says Maxim, 15, participant.

The long-term impact of the “Civic Education and Opportunities for Disadvantaged Youth” project extends beyond the immediate trainings. By instilling a sense of civic responsibility and active citizenship, the project aims to inspire these young individuals to become agents of change within their communities. Through their newfound knowledge and skills, they have the potential to contribute positively to society, thereby strengthening the democratic fabric of their nation.
